What do You Learn in a Cybersecurity Course

What do you learn in a cybersecurity course with Cybersteps?

The path to a cybersecurity career starts with a small step of curiosity, and continues through hands-on practice and professional guidance. Whether you’re an IT enthusiast, already work in tech, or simply want to make a real career change — the cybersecurity world is evolving fast, and demand for experts in the field keeps growing.

What’s included in Cybersteps’ cybersecurity course syllabus?

Our program is built around 4 progressively advanced modules:

Module 1 – Cybersecurity Fundamentals

We start from the basics: how computers work, operating systems (Windows and Linux), networking (TCP/IP, tools like Wireshark), applications and APIs, cryptography, and also how to use AI tools. By the end of this module, you’ll be prepared for the CompTIA Tech+ certification (exam voucher included).

Module 2 – Core Topics in Cybersecurity

Here you move into the real world: social engineering and phishing, web hacking, analyzing and exploiting vulnerabilities across Windows, Linux, and Active Directory, security monitoring with SIEM tools, and risk management and governance (GRC). This module prepares you for the CompTIA Security+ certification (exam voucher included).

Module 3 – Cloud & Enterprise Security

Working with cloud infrastructure, automation with Terraform, monitoring with tools like Microsoft Sentinel, and identity and access management with Entra ID. This module prepares you for the Microsoft Azure Fundamentals (AZ-900) and Security, Compliance, and Identity Fundamentals (SC-900) certifications (exam vouchers included).

Module 4 – Cybersecurity Specializations

In this final part, you choose a specialization from 6 in-demand tracks — SOC, security engineering, penetration testing, GRC, cyber project management, and application security — and earn an IHK Cyber Security Advisor certification or a PECB ISO/IEC 27001 certification, depending on your chosen path (exam vouchers included).

Is the course suitable for people without a technical background?

Absolutely. The program has 2 different tracks – one for career changers without any IT experience, and one for people with IT experience. Each track is built so that anyone, regardless of prior experience, can progress at their own pace.

For career changers with no IT experience: start from zero in module 1, and learn for 12 months plus a 2-month internship. We also provide a 6-month option, also starting in module 1, for those with less time to study.

For experienced IT professionals looking to upskill: learn for 3-9 months, starting from module 2 or 3, depending on your experience and goals. Our admissions advisors will be able to guide you towards the right starting module for you.

How long does the course take?

3-12 months of live classes, combined with guided practice and hands-on projects. At the end, students complete a two-month internship at one of the 400+ partner companies in our network.

Can the course be funded with an education voucher (Bildungsgutschein)?

Yes. If you’re registered as unemployed or facing unemployment and meet the eligibility criteria set by the Agentur für Arbeit, the entire Cybersteps Cybersecurity Weiterbildung program can be covered through the Bildungsgutschein — at no cost to you. Your existing unemployment benefits also continue uninterrupted while you train.

What do you get at the end of the program?

  • The IHK Cyber Security Advisor certification
  • 2-6 certifications: CompTIA, Microsoft, PECB, and 1 certification of your choice
  • A Lenovo ThinkPad laptop
  • Full career support — resume building, LinkedIn profile, and interview preparation in 1:1 sessions with a career coach

In summary

Every secure career starts with a small step. If you have the curiosity and the drive to grow — we’ll give you the tools, the guidance, and the most professional program to help you enter the world of cybersecurity.
